University of Delhi: A brief backdrop
Established in 1922, the University of Delhi was opened
in the Ritz Cinema complex within the elite environments of
historic Kashmere Gate.
The journey of this esteemed institution is adorned with
numerous milestones. Making a modest beginning when it had
3 colleges, 2 faculties, 6 departments and 750 students, it
now boasts of 79 colleges, 14 faculties, 86 academic departments
spread all over the city with around 300,000 students pursuing
courses at the Undergraduate and Post Graduate levels in most
subjects.
In an effort to cope with this enormous expansion, the University
in the early seventies initiated a new organizational pattern
based on the multi-campus concept. The South Campus made a
beginning in 1973 by starting postgraduate programmes in some
departments of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in
a rented building. The campus acquired land near Dhaula Kuan
where the building of Arts Faculty was first constructed.
A number of these and other University departments received
grants under the Special ssistance Programme of the UGC in
recognition of their outstanding academic work.
The University has 15 libraries in addition to Libraries
in the Colleges. The University Science Instrumentation Centre
(USIC) has a number of sophisticated research instruments
which are used by several departments of the University and
by other institutions in Delhi and its neighborhood. The University
has just completed the implementation of fiber-optic networks
on the North and South Campuses.
The Indian President is Delhi University's Chancellor. The
University has a history of Nobel Prize winners as its alumni
and faculty. It is especially known for its faculties in Economics,
Science, Mathematics, Languages and Hindustani Classical Music.
Most of the centers in DU are now the centers of excellence
in teaching and research in their respective areas.
